Risk of Western Balkans–EU border blockade remains

ransport associations from Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and North Macedonia continue preparations for a blockade of land border crossings with the EU starting on 14 September 2026.

The action is related to restrictions on professional drivers' stays in the Schengen Area – a maximum of 90 days within any 180-day period – as well as the implementation of the Entry/Exit System (EES).

Following discussions on 1 September, no solution has yet been reached. The European Commission confirmed that the 90/180-day rule remains in force, while indicating that practical solutions for professional drivers will be explored.

If no agreement is reached, a potential blockade could cause significant delays to road freight transport, including traffic to Bulgaria and Greece.

STM Group is closely monitoring the situation and will provide timely updates on any developments that may affect international road transport.
